(MIS)FORTUNE

Resin, acrylic, 11.5 x 9 x 16 cm

2023

"(Mis)fortune" is a sculpture which explores the dichotomy between karma and luck, and more broadly, questions the future of supernatural beliefs in an increasingly sceptical world which is constantly advancing in the areas of science and technology.

The Maneki-neko, a popular icon known to bring good luck, is tattooed with gold symbols illustrating superstitions believed to attract "bad luck" across numerous Eastern cultures. This jarring combination creates ambiguity and invites discussions about the degree of autonomy we have over our lives and how much our lives are affected by forces outside of our control.
